Manila, Filippines – Gilas Youth scored one of the most crooked victories of the U16 Fiba Asia Cup Seaba qualifications on Wednesday evening, largely thanks to the efforts of GAB Delos Reyes.
The Philippines demolished Singapore, 101-37, in Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center, with a uniform effort on the defensive end.
Coach La Tenorio has credited a certain young gun to set the tone defensively.
“It’s great to have a player like GAB because he is working hard on defense,” Tenorio said. “We need all our players to have this mentality because they can all score, but there are other things that we should pay attention to.”
Delos Reyes came from the bank and only played 22 minutes, but he got the most out of his time and delivered a monster all-round version: seven points, 13 rebounds, seven blocks, six assists and a stem.
His energy on the defense led to the rest of the team, while Gilas youth won 14 Steals and nine blocks in the eruption that improved their record to 3-0.
“I think this was our best defensive game,” Tenorio said. “We were not unnecessary gambling for Steels. We were more disciplined and it turned out to date with our best performance.”
The swarming defense of the Philippines suppressed Singapore, who only managed to shoot 19 percent.
Gilas Youth hopes to wear the same defensive mindset when it encounters on Wednesday that the undefeated team of Indonesia.
