  • The star was on loan in Chelmsford from Ipswich before he signed up for Wimbledon
  • He made six performances for the club after he came to them in the January window

A football player who plays in the Football League is accused of breaking gambling rules.

Footballers are forbidden to gamble on the sport, although a number of players have been charged over the years. Ivan Toney received a ban on gambling involvement more than two years ago.

Now AFC Wimbledon’s Osman Foyo has been sued, claiming that he had placed bets at competitions 252 times between October 2023 and March 2025.

Foyo, 20, has made six performances for Wimbledon since he came to the club in the winter transfer window, after he had spent the first half of the season on loan in Chelmsford when he was contracted in Ipswich.

His form in the National League South, in which he scored 12 goals in 21 games, attracted the interest of the then League Two Side, who won promotion at League One in the Play-Offs.

He played as recently as Tuesday, in their friendly against Enfield Town. He scored twice.

Foyo could get a long ban if he is found guilty of the charges, whereby Toney receives a ban of eight months and Ryan Bowman, formerly from the will of Cheltenham and Shrewsbury, a three and a half year ban this week.

Bowman turned out to have placed 6,397 bets for a period of 12 months.

The FA say that players cannot bet ‘to protect the integrity and the future of football’.

Managers, coaches and other staff members are also forbidden for places on the sport.

AFC Wimbledon has been contacted for comment.
