Conor Gallagher accepts that there is “a lot of improvement” to make after a disappointing international break in which England went to a first defeat under Thomas Tuchel.

England worked on a non-impressive 1-0 victory over Andorra, one side in the 173rd in the world, before he slid their first defeat against African opposition three days later.

Despite the early goal of Harry Kane, the warning signals were there when Dean Henderson made five rescues in the first period, but after Ismaila Sarr van Crystal Palace attracted the level of the visitors, Habib Diarra and Cheikh Sabaly pulled in the second half while angry around the city grounds.

Gallagher, who was replaced in the second half, revealed that Tuchel was calm in the dressing room after the game and is frustrated that the next international window was three months away.

The midfielder of Atletico Madrid said: “It was really a tough game, but we are still building. There is much to improve and there is a lot to work on and as a team we will do that.

“I am sure that the manager and the coaching staff look back on the game and see where we can be better because there is a lot of improvement to make, but we are going ahead.

“He’s calm. He is clearly disappointed and not happy, but he is calm with us. He knows we can be a lot better.

“It’s a shame because we are now away from each other for a few months now, while he wants to solve the problem right away, but he can’t because it is how it is in international football.

“It is a work in execution and all the boys and staff and the manager are all confident and happy with the progression.

“We have a lot to build and improve and that is what we are going to try to do.”

England was accused not to show the right attitude in their scary victory over Minnows Andorra.

Asked if they had shown the right request against Senegal, Gallagher replied: “Yes, sure. I think we really wanted to win and I feel that we have worked hard.

“I don’t think we were great, if I’m honest. But as I keep saying, it’s a kind of work in progress and we have to improve progress and we are all happy to do that.”

Gallagher’s Focus will now switch to the club World Cup while he is preparing to join his Atletico teammates in the United States prior to their first match against Champions League winners Paris St Germain in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

He said: “It is really exciting and I am really looking forward to it. It will be a great tournament. I think it will be really exciting if all the teams are real and the tournament starts.

“You always want to play against the best players and the midfielders. Of course (PSG) had an incredible season, so you want to play against these guys. We know how difficult it will be, but it’s good for us and it’s exciting.”
