Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar starts a three -day visit to Singapore and China on Sunday (July 13, 2025).
Mr Jaishankar visits China to attend a conclave from the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in the Chinese city of Tianjin, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
It would be Mr Jaishankar’s first visit to China after the ties between the two countries came under heavy tension after the 2020 military impasse along the line of actual control (LAC) in East -Ladakh.
“Minister of Foreign Affairs S. Jaishankar will visit Singapore and the People’s Republic of China from 13 to 15 July,” said the MEA.
In Singapore, Mr Jaishankar will meet his counterpart and the leadership of the country as part of the regular exchanges between the two parties, it said.
“After that, the Minister of Foreign Affairs will visit the People’s Republic of China to participate in the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (CFM) that is held in Tianjin,” the ministry said in a statement.
Mr Jaishankar will also keep bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the CFM.
National Security Advisor (NSA) Doval visited Beijing in December last year and held the special representatives (SR) dialogue across the border question with the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Mr. Doval also visited China last month for a meeting of top security officers of the SCO member states.
Mr Jaishankar’s visit comes less than three weeks after Minister of Defense Rajnath Singh traveled to the Chinese port city of Qingdao to participate in the SCO Defense Ministers’ Conference.
China is the current chairman of the SCO and in that capacity organizes the meetings of the grouping.
The military impasse in the eastern Ladakh started in May 2020 and a fatal collision in the Galwan valley in June that year resulted in a serious tension in ties between the two neighbors.
The face-off ended effectively after completing the decoupling process of the last two friction points of Demchok and Depsang under an agreement that was completed on October 21 last year.
In recent months, India and China have started a number of measures to restore bilateral tires.
The decision to breathe new life into the SR mechanism and other such dialog formats was taken during a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan on October 23.
The Modi-Jinping meeting came two days after India and China had a decoupling pact for Depsang and Demchok.
