A player who was mainly close to Diogo Jota in Liverpool, wrote a long tribute to his former teammate after he died in a devastating car accident in Spain on Thursday
Former Liverpool -goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has published a long tribute to Diogo Jota after the tragic news of his sudden death. The couple spent five years as teammates in Anfield and saved a particularly good friendship, where Jota even refers to the Irishman as his close friend on Merseyside.
The football community was turned upside down on Thursday after it appeared, Jota, 28, died in a car accident next to his brother, Andre Silva. The couple traveled in a Lamborghini near Zamora in Spain when it removed from the road and burst into flames, with both dead before the emergency services arrived.
Figures in the sport from all over the world have paid tribute to the Premier League champion. And now Kelleher, who attended Jota’s marriage to wife Rute Cardoso less than fourteen days prior to his death, wrote his own sincere message to his deceased former teammate.
“Jotsen. I can’t believe that I am writing this now and I find it difficult to put into words,” read the Instagram post of the 26-year-old. “I was absolutely destroyed by this news. All my thoughts and condolences are with Rute and their three beautiful children and Diogo and Andre’s family. It was so nice to get to know you in these years and to share some special memories on the field and get rid of it.
“You became one of my best friends in football. We bound to all the things that watched sports to watch every football match that we could often find the game of your brother Andre on your iPad.
“I was surprised that a boy from Portugal loved sports such as darts, snooker and horse races so much and some of my best memories laughed to see them with you.
“You were such a nice sincere, normal sober and loving family man and always very competitive. I am going to miss our pre -match program. I feel so blessed and grateful that I saw you on your happiest day, the day of your wedding and to be able to share with you that day was special. I will never forget.
“You were deeply loved by everyone in the club, the city and all over the world. It will hurt for a long time and I will miss you so much, but I feel so happy that I got to know you and have such a good friend. I love your diogo.”
The testimony revealed the size of their band outside the field, illustrated by the fact that Kelleher was present for one of the greatest days in Jota’s life. Kelleher, who came to Brentford earlier this summer in a £ 18 million deal, and Liverpool Let-back Andy Robertson was each present as Jota and Teen Love Rute Rute de Knoop in their hometown of Porto.
Both Kelleher and Robertson were also on the side of Jota when they took some horse races together in Cheltenham in March. However, it is clear that their band has been much deeper than just sport.
Jota previously confirmed that Kelleher was his best friend in the Liverpool team in a union that few might have expected. When asked who was his best Anfield -friend in 2024, the Portuguese answered: “Nowadays I would say Cooimhin. There have been a few who left the team.
“We play a quiz game, we play each other. There is one in the Match Day program. It is a good way to start the Match Day promotion.”
A fan answered on Kelleher’s sad post and said, “Sorry for your loss Caoimhin. We can all see how close you are. It is absolutely devastating.”
Teammates from the Republic of Ireland, John Egan and Adam Idah, also responded with Love Heart Emojis as a show of support for their fellow countryman.
