Cricket mourns for death at the age of 61 of David ‘Syd’ Lawrence, the popular and sincere England and Gloucestershire Fast Bowler who was diagnosed with motor neuron disease a year ago.
Lawrence played five tests for England between 1988 and 1992 and took 515 first -class wickets in a career that lasted 17 years, and was made a MBE last week in the list of the king’s birthday monours.
In 2022 he was appointed president of Gloucestershire, the first black man to play the role.
His autobiography, in Syd’s Voice, was published earlier this month, but the destruction of the disease was quickly overtaking.
On Friday evening, the T20 explosion match of his old province against Hampshire in Bristol Pink became in honor of him, to increase the consciousness of the disease and funds to help fight it. He died the next day.
Lawrence was one of the fastest bowlers on the County Circuit in his splendor and formed a deadly new ball combination with the West India Quick Courtney Walsh, who became one of his best friends.

He made his test debut against Sri Lanka in Lord’s in 1988 and took the Araavinda prize wicket to help set up an England.
But his career was briefly briefly due to a pathogenic injury against new -Zeeland in Wellington in February 1992, when he freight his left -handed breakdown during his episode and was stretched with pain.
He never played for England again, although five years later he made a short comeback and played four more champion matches for Gloucestershire before called it a day.
After having had a depression, he started a new career as a night clube owner and restaurant owner in Bristol, and enjoyed an unexpected career as a bodybuilder, won an amateur title in the west of England for the 40S.
A statement from Gloucestershire was: ‘Syd was an inspiring figure on and next to the cricket field, and no more than for his family who was with him when he passed.
‘A proud Gloucestershire man, Syd took on every challenge with everything he could and his last game with mnd was no different. His willingness to encourage others at the end and to think of others was typical of the man he was.
“As President of Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, Syd took on the role with incredible pride and passion and loved it every minute.
“Syd’s wife Gaynor and Son Buster thank everyone for the friendliness and support that has so far been shown to them and the family and would ask that they now get some time and space to mourn privately.”
