Japan Airlines Co. Vlucht JL8696 made an emergency landing on Kansai Airport on Monday evening after a failure of the pressure system of the pressure was forced the Boeing Co. Ba 737-800 in a rapid descent of 32,800 feet.
What happened: The plane, operated by Spring Airlines Japan on a code distribution service from Shanghai to Tokyo, diverted to Osaka around 8:50 PM local time. All 191 passengers and crew survived without injuries, according to Japanese government officials, reported The South China Morning Post.
Pilots warned air traffic controllers after the pressure system of the aircraft had caused an irregularity warning. The system maintains the air pressure at safe levels during the flight. Passengers reported that oxygen masks were used when the plane descended from more than 10,000 meters to 3,000 meters within 20 minutes.
“The plane started to fall violently around 7 pm,” said a passenger according to the report, and described the descent as life -threatening.
Spring Airlines Japan, founded in 2012 through joint investments between Spring Airlines and Jal, based in Shanghai, offered passengers 15,000 yen ($ 104) compensation. Japan Airlines became the holding company in June 2021 and retained a 67%interest.
“My body is still here, but my soul is not overtaken. My legs are still vibrating. If you face life or death, everything else feels trivial,” the passenger wrote according to the report.

Why it matters: The incident contributes to the continuous safety problems of Boeing. The 737 series has experienced countless global incidents, including at least 12 fatal crashes since 2000. Recent disasters include the December 2024 Jeju Air Crash in South Korea, where 179 people and China Eastern Airlines Flight MU5735 were killed in March 2022, killing 132.

The Indian authorities found the Black Box data of the aircraft last week, with researchers from the India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau working together with the US National Transportation Safety Board to analyze flight data and speech recordings.
