A NIPAH case was reported in the state on Saturday when a 58-year-old man who died in a private hospital in Perinthalmanna in the evening tested positive for the deadly virus in the first tests.

The man from Kumaramputhur, near Mannarkkad, in the Palakkad district, was treated in the hospital for fever -related ailments. His sample was sent for testing because he reportedly showed symptoms of Nipah, including acute mental disorientation.

The first tests performed in the Virology Laboratory in the Government Medical College Hospital, Manjeri, turned out to be positive for Nipah on Saturday evening. However, the final confirmation must come from the National Institute of Virology, Pune.

The fresh Nipah case came at a time when the health authorities started relaxing the limitations imposed in the aftermath of two Nipah cases reported in the Palakkad and Malappuram districts.

Six departments in Thachahanattukara and Karimpuzha Panchayats in the Palakkad district and 20 departments in Kuruva, Mekkaraparamba and Mankada Panchayats in the Malappuram district were declared inclusion zones. However, the limitations were lifted on Thursday in Malappuram and Palakkad.

After the new NIPAH case in Kumaramputhur, health officials in Palakkad and Malappuram race to trace everyone who has come into contact with the victim in recent weeks.

On Saturday, 497 people in the entire state were observed for Nipah. According to Minister of Health Veena George, 203 of them were in Malappuram, 114 in Kozhikode, 178 in Palakkad and two in Ernakulam.

Ten people on the Nipah contact list in Malappuram were treated, with one of them in intensive care. No fewer than 62 samples tested negatively in Malappuram. Five people were treated in Palakkad.
