Almost 800 people died to have access to help in Gaza since the end of May, with the most killed in the vicinity of the USA and Israel Humanitarian Foundation’s sites supported by Israel, the UN said Friday.
An official private effort, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) began to operations on 26 May after Israel had put the stocks in the Gaza Strip for more than two months, which led to warnings of the threatening famine.
Since those operations started until July 7, spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani of the UN rights office said that the office “615 killed killings near the GHF locations”.
Another 183 people were killed “presumably on the routes of auxiliary voyages” performed by UN and other aid organizations, she told reporters in Geneva.
“These are almost 800 people who were killed while they try to gain access to help,” she said, adding that “most injuries are shot wounds”.
GHF operations, which effectively set aside a huge UN assistance network in Gaza, are marred by chaotic scenes and nearly-daily reports of Israeli troops that are taking on people waiting to collect rations.
The GHF, who said on Thursday that it had distributed more than 69 million meals so far, has denied that deadly shootings have taken place in the immediate vicinity of his auxiliary points.
‘Lessons learned’
The Israeli army has accused Hamas of being responsible for shooting citizens near auxiliary centers.
The army said on Friday that it had given instructions to the forces of Israel in the field “after the lessons learned” after reports of fatal incidents at distribution facilities.
It explained that “the American Civil Organization (GHF) enables help to distribute help to the residents of Gaza independently and is active in the vicinity of the new distribution zones to make distribution possible in addition to the continuation of IDF operational activities in the Gaza Strip”.
“As part of this effort, IDF troops have recently worked to reorganize the area through the installation of fences, signage, the opening of extra routes and other measures,” said it.
The army emphasized that “after incidents in which citizens who came to distribution facilities were reported, thorough investigations were carried out,” adding that those incidents “were” assessed by the competent authorities in the IDF “.
Mrs Shamdasani emphasized that the UN Rights Office had repeatedly “serious worries about respect for international humanitarian law principles” in the war in Gaza, who broke out after Hamas’s fatal attack on October 7, 2023 in Israel.
“Where people stand in line for essential supplies such as food and medicines, and where they are attacked, where … they have the choice between being shot or fed, this is unacceptable,” she said.
