The Chicago Department of Transportation announced seven new speed enforcement cameras that will be activated this month.

Each camera has a warning period of 30 days to start when no fines are issued. After that, quotes are issued to drivers who exceed the speed limit by six km / h or more.

If vehicles drive six to 10 km / h over the speed limit, they will receive a fine of $ 35. Drivers traveling 11 km / h or more on the limit will be fined $ 100.

There will also be a black -out period, in which cameras will record violations, but will not give fines.

The Speed ​​camera program of Chicago is intended to improve road safety, encourage safer driving and to reduce crashes, the website of the city said.

Most cameras are close to parks and school zones.

The following locations began to give warnings on 1 June, with enforcement from July 15:

  • 1477 W. Cermak RD – Benito Juarez High School
  • 147 S. Desplaines St – Francis Xavier Warte School

The following locations will give warnings from 15 June, with enforcement from 1 August:

  • 4021 W. Belmont Ave: Aspira School
  • 631 S. Racine Ave: Arrigo Park
  • 216 S. Jefferson St: Heritage Green Park
  • 8550 S. Lafayette Ave: Perspectives High School
  • 2948 W. 47th ST: Mansueto High School

The city is planning to add more speed cameras throughout the year to achieve its goal to install 50 new cameras in 2025.

The automated systems have signage and paving markings to indicate that speed laws are being enforced in the area.

Automated enforcement hours for school zone cameras are limited to 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on school days, according to the city. The regulations for speed cameras in school zones are as follows:

  • 7 am to 4 pm on school days when children are present: 20 MPH
  • 4 pm to 7 pm: Posted Speed ​​Limited is applicable

Enforcement hours for park zones are limited to the hours when each park is open, which is usually from 6 to 2.00 to 11 p.m. every day of the week.
