The side of Heimir Hallgrimsson was eight minutes away from achieving an impressive victory over Senegal on Friday, but the equalizer of Ismaila Sarr meant that they had to settle for a draw.
That result, however, stretched the unbeaten run from Ireland to four games, while building confidence before their World Cup qualification campaign that starts in September with a double header against Hungary and Armenia.
Opposite a Luxembourg side arranged in 91st place in the FIFA World Rankings, Ireland are tough favorites to win tonight.
Hallgrimsson, however, has issued a warning for complacency to his players after he remembered in a friendly victory of Luxembourg over Sweden in March.
He said: “Luxembourg has shown in the past how quickly they have developed as a football team. They have long had the same coach, really consistent in team selection, so it looks more like playing a club team.
“I watched the Sweden match when they played here, they defeated Sweden with 1-0 and they could have scored more goals against Sweden.
“And I know a bit about them, the power of Sweden. So I wouldn’t consider it a shock to the nation if we didn’t get a good result here.
“It is so good a team that a victory here at this stage would be really good for us. I hope that nobody takes them slightly, if that is the right word to say.”
So will Luxembourg claim another large scalp or will Ireland make the five games unbeaten? Here is everything you need to know where to look …
