Toon -legend Alan Shearer claims that Newcastle is better equipped to be crowned Prime Minister League champions than the entertainers of Kevin Keegan.

Shearer came to his hometown club 19 years ago, weeks after they had wrapped the title by Manchester United and in his first season in St James’s Park the Magpies finished in second place. But after seeing Newcastle ending of the age of 70 waiting for domestic silverware, the record position of the club believes that the platform was laid for further success.

Asked if the party of Eddie Howe has a better chance to win the competition than the side he played in, Shearer said: “I think they did that. That team was really a good one, but he did something that we couldn’t do, something that Sir Bobby Robson couldn’t do, what Kevin Keegan couldn’t do.

“And Eddie Howe has had to do it in the hard way. They won the Carabao Cup and defeated the big boys who were all top four or five in the table – Forest, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool.

“Can they be challenged for the title? They have the opportunity to sign the right players. By August if they bring in two of the three large batters, they will be in a better position.”

Looking back in his tone career, Shearer added: “I was not there when she lost a 12 -point lead. I came in and was meant to be the last part of the puzzle, but that’s not how it succeeded. Now they are in a really healthy position. They have not signed anyone in the last three windows, so you would think they are ready to put on to put on.”

Newcastle has asked strong questions for Joao Pedro and Anthony Elanga by Brighton van Nottingham Forest, although a deal is unlikely in this, the first transfer window of the closed season.

Keegan achieved a second and a third during his time who was in charge of the Magpies. Since then, Sir Bobby Robson has been the only man who goes close, although his indictment against the title in the early 2000s was out of breath.

The iconic manager took the lead in St James’ Park and finished fourth and third in successive seasons when Newcastle made a regular top four side. Howe has the club again in that position with their resources, which means that they probably linger.
