8 homemade recipes for baby care (who really work)

If you looked at my counter tops, you will see them strewn with natural skin care products. Although there are now many healthy, natural products on the market, I still like it my own. And when my children were babies, I made almost all their baby care products.

Even if you are not yet ready to jump on the Bandwagon of the Doe -the sameodorant and toothpaste, you may want to try to make your hand to make recipes for baby care. It is an easy way to ensure that they use simple, natural ingredients that are softer on sensitive skin.

Their small skin absorbs what we put on it, and opting for homemade products can be an easy solution. These are the recipes that I used on my own children when they were small. I also give them to friends when they have babies.

Natural diaper rash cream cloth diaper safe!

I started fabric with my third child and I am so happy that I switched! It is not only much cheaper, but it is more natural and much easier than I expected. I had heard too many horror stories about the older -fashioned diapers of older family members. Thanks to fabric diapers and better food, my babies rarely had diaper rash.

On the rare occasion, however, Baby poops at night and does not wake up until the morning or he gets a rash while on a journey in the car seat, it can be a bit harder with fabric diapers.

Some conventional diaper creams cannot be used with fabric diapers. And some ingredients will even invalid all the warranty on the fabric diapers. Everything with petroleum jelly or liver oil can cover the diaper and prevent it from absorbing it properly. After a lot of research (and falling and error) I finally made a diaper cream that is safe and works for substances diaper, as well as the medicinal versions. For extra calming care, first infuse the coconut oil with calendula and chamomile flowers!

Baby oil baby care recipe

Regular baby oil is based on petroleum and most are full of artificial scents! You can always use regular coconut oil, but making a soaked oil adds extra soothing ingredients and speeds up the skin healing. Calendula and Chamomile are both calming to irritated skin and have anti-microbial, anti-fungus, anti-inflammatory and relaxing properties.

Here my favorite recipe for herbs is steeped in baby oil:

  • Put the herbs in a glass jar and pour the oil over it. Place the lid on the pot and save in a cool, dark spot, shake daily for 4-8 weeks.

  • A faster way is by using the failure infusion method instead. Add the oil and herbs to the top of a double kettle over medium heat. Heat gently for 1-3 hours and fill the water in the bottom pot if necessary.

  • Sift out the herbs with cheese cloth or a fine mesh sieve.

  • Use as your regular baby oil.

This recipe is very relaxing and great for every irritated skin, including eczema!

Homemade baby powder

Soothing baby powder

Until recently, most baby powder was infected with asbestos (which is known to cause cancer). Although brands now opt for cornflour above talk, they still contain other ingredients that are not great for babies. The iconic baby scent found in conventional products for taking care of babies is due to artificial (and toxic) scents.

Fortunately, there are now plenty of fantastic options when it comes to of course baby powder! You can find a natural baby powder like this Organic One from eraorganics And Little Twig Baby Powder. If you prefer to make your own, it is simple and cheap to do this. You can even adjust it with herbs for extra benefits.

Homemade baby wipes

Homemade baby wipes

Eighteen years ago, when my oldest was born (was it really so long ago ??) I started making my own baby wipes. Like most DIY recipes, it was cheaper and healthier than buying diaper wipes in the store. As every mother knows, between sweeping small Tushies, hands and faces, it is easy to go through many wipes!

And I was already washing fabric diapers a few times a week, so it was no problem to throw in the fabric wipes with the diapers. You can also use the Diaper WIPE formula solution with paper towels to make disposable wipes. Not only are the fabrics more natural and more environmentally friendly, but they are also cheaper!

DIY lotion

Super smooth baby lotion and lotion bars

I used my basic recipe for homemade lotion on all my children and it is soft enough for the baby skin. It uses soothing ingredients such as shea butter, coconut oil and vitamin E for baby-soft skin. For real little ones, skip the essential oils and infuse the oils with herbs such as calendula instead!

I also recently discovered that homemade lotion bars are an even better option. They help protect the baby’s delicate skin, but still let it breathe. You can penetrate the oil with lavender, chamomile or calendula if you want, but the basic lotion bars themselves work excellent. I especially like to use it for babies with sensitive skin or eczema. They are even easier to make, last longer and are also fun for children to use.

Baby shampoo or washing

For the most part, babies do not need soap or shampoos. It is best not to wash the naturally protective oils in their skin. However, if you are dealing with a large diaper bladder or another mess, soap can be very useful!

If you need a swinging soap to have the feeling that the baby is clean, I propose Dr. Bronner’s sensitive skin soap. You can use it for both soap and shampoo. When my babies were small, I just used a damp, wet cloth to usually wipe the mess. I would follow it with coconut oil or baby oil (above) when needed, which was not often. If you want to go one step further and make your own Castile soap -foaming baby wash, try the recipe below!

how you can make chamomile tincture for children

Natural teething problems/pain lighting

I don’t use a children’s Tylenol or Motrin with my children and I didn’t do that when they were teething problems. Instead, I opted for more natural ways to calm child pain. You can find many natural solutions in this post to survive teething problems.

Chamomile tincture is by far my most used tincture with babies and children. I usually use it externally on babies to calm colic or teething problems and internally for older children who have problems sleeping or who have a headache or abdominal pain.

Homemade vapor rub

Baby vapor rubbing

Having little ones with stuffy noses is not fun for them or their parents. Most vapor rubs on the market are not safe for little ones because they have Menthol, so that babies can stop breathing. There are baby -safe versions, but many contain ingredients based on petroleum, also something that I try to avoid.

You can easily rub your own vapor with baby -friendly essential oils. This helps to move stuck mucus in the lungs and to open the airways for clearer breathing. Find my recipe for homemade vapor friction, plus natural options purchased in the store if you don’t feel like making it, on the link below.
