Bumrah was a striking artist in the Australia series that took an impressive 32 wickets over five games. Unfortunately, a back injury brought him aside halfway through the fifth test.

While India is preparing for their tour to England, Shubman Gill stepped into the spotlight as the new test captain during a press conference before departure in Mumbai, accompanied by head coach Gautam Gambhir. The team, led by Gill, will have a warm-up match against India A in an Intra-Squad match before it dives into the long-awaited India-England test series, which starts on 20 June. During the press conference, both Gambhir and Gill with reporters would shared that they were uncertain about which three Jasprit Bumrah matches would participate.

“We did not hire that call, which three games he will play,” said Gambhir during the Press Conference of India prior to departure in Mumbai. “We will also have a discussion with him and also dependent on the series. A lot will depend on the results of the series, where the series is going. That is something that I am sure is well aware and that is important.”

“I think we have plucked enough bowlers and we have enough pace battery and many fast bowlers are in a great space to win our test competitions from every situation or a different position,” Gill said.

That said, it would not be shocking if Bumrah missed all five tests. Given the events in Australia earlier this year, it seemed likely that India would not risk their fast bowler in both sizes for the entire series.

When the test team of India was announced last month, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar revealed that medical staff Bumrah had advised against playing several consecutive tests as part of his workload management. This precautionary measure followed a stress response in his back during the fifth test in Sydney in January, and he only returned to the field after missing the first four games of IPL 2025 with the Mumbai Indians.

India’s 18-man test team contains other specialist fast bowlers such as Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep and Arshdep Singh, together with seam bowling all-rounders Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shardul Thakur.
