The Italian Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said that the spectacle was caused over the most active volcano in Europe when part of the southeastern crater collapsed, resulting in hot lava streams.
The area of danger was limited to the top of Etna, which as a precaution was closed to tourists, according to Stefano Branca, an INGV officer in Catania.

The president of Sicily, Renato Schifani, said that lava streams that were broadcast in the eruption had not passed the natural interlocking area, “and was not a danger to the population”.
Vibrations from the eruption were felt on a large scale in the towns and villages on the flanks of Mount Etna, Italian media reported.
