Pinterest has launched a new series of visual search aids that are aimed at making users easier to discover content, refine and shop that matches their individual flavors. The updates are initially rolled out for fashion content of women in the US, Canada and the UK, with plans to expand to extra categories and countries in the future.
The company says that the latest innovation generative AI uses to help users to navigate more visual content more intuitively, without having to rely on traditional searches on keywords. When users view an image pins, Pinterest now generates relevant descriptive terms that help explain the attraction of the image and to guide further exploration. A new animated glow emphasizes selectable parts of an image with which users can shop or search directly for specific objects.
“Our visual search technology means a shift in how users deal with and discover inspiration,” said Dana Cho, Pinterest VP of Design. “We not only deliver search results – we have a personalized journey of discovery together that enables individuals to find their unique style and also to shop.”
A new refinement bar has also been introduced to help users limit their search results. For example, someone can view an outfit and refine his search to see similar options in a different style, such as “Y2K”, or use the “occasion” filter to find more formal versions of a favorite item.
Pinterest also expands the availability of his visual search functions on the platform. Users can now press on any pin in their home feed for a long time to activate the “search image” function, which improves accessibility for the new tools.
The improved possibilities of the platform are powered by Visual Language Models (VLMs) and multimodal embedding models, with which Pinterest can enable and interpret both visual and textual information. This integration enables users to search with the help of a combination of images and words, which effectively expand their ability to find content that reflects their personal aesthetics.
“With our new visual search functions, users can discover, refine and shop, refine their inspiration into reality,” the company said.
