Lionesses -Baas Sarina Wiegman has responded to the decision of goalkeeper Mary Earps to call her career in England and says that she is “sad and emotional” to lose her after such a “incredible journey”.

The decision of the 32-year-old to come, after earning 53 caps over a period of eight years, comes from this summer’s European championship in Switzerland.

Earps, who came to PSG from Manchester United last year, stood for increased competition for her place of Hannah Hampton from Chelsea, but would participate in the camp for Nations League matches against Portugal and Spain this week.

“I am really disappointed, I want her in my team,” Wiegman repeated, to reflect the sentiment of Tuesday’s official announcement.

“That must have been a difficult decision for her, and so it is for us. Of course there have been conversations, that’s between us, it’s confidential.

“She has done so great work for England, we have had an incredible journey. I really cherish that, that is where the disappointment comes from. It is emotional because we have a relationship and we have many highlights, also a few lows. It makes it difficult. I am sad.

“I try to make contact with players in the best possible way. What you hope is that everyone feels good enough, fit enough and ready to come in, but that is not always the case.

“It is part of the increased demands on players and the development of the game. We must continue to have conversations together.”

Targetmen Khiara Keating and Anna Moorhouse are located next to the new No. 1 Hampton in Wiegman’s 26-player team to play Portugal on Friday and Spain in Barcelona on Tuesday.

Victories in both England would secure a place in the knockout phase of Nations League.

“These keepers play at a high level at clubs, and that is also experience,” said Wiegman, when he was asked if a lack of great tournament experience under her goalkeeper department was a concern.

“Big crowds, things like that. So we have experience and a big tournament experience with England is the next step.

“The spotlights are on us, on every player, and also on Hannah Hampton. We try to give every player the support they need in collaboration with their clubs.”

England -captain Leah Williamson discusses how much she wanted Mary Earps as a teammate this summer, after her announcement of International Pension earlier this week.

England captain Leah Williamson Speaking from St George’s Park:

“I spoke with Mary. She is one of my best friends in football. I am devastated because I love her. I am very sad that those memories do not continue in an English shirt. If she thinks this is best for her, I will always support her.

“I know Mary, I know playing for her country meant everything to her. I first take care of Mary as a person. To lose her, leave an opening there, but we had to perform players before.

“There are days and months of preparation that go in the team and now there are a number of large shoes to fill. I won the Champions League on Saturday and I was here three days later, football is not waiting, it keeps moving.

“I can’t wait to see Mary’s highlights Reel, because that will be great, but for now we have a job to do.”

EARPs deserved her right to possess the story

Analysis by Sky Sports’ Laura Hunter:

Much has been written about Mary Earps in the days after her shock announcement. Some positive, some negative, much frustrating. I wrote how her legacy and contribution to the game now replace the need of England, although the timing clearly stings.

Undoubtedly Earps, a stabilizing but enigmatic character, makes England stronger this summer. But the rise of Chelsea’s Hannah Hampton, selected to start against Spain in the Nations League in February, made Wiegman’s position over her current No. 1 clear.

Re -accepting the role of representative would not have been easy for a player whose darkest days were spent waiting in the shade. Elite athletes want to compete. And although football is a team match, the position of keeper is clearly an insulating one.

The assumption of the role of No. 2 is, with all probability, to accept zero minutes in Switzerland. EARPs had been a stand-in for many years and it took a psychological toll. Perhaps, in combination with the desire and need for a new chance (she will be a lot of demand this summer!), Was just the priority.
