A 29-year-old female police officer was found dead with a shot wound in the Nagapattinam District Collector’s Office early on Sunday morning. Authorities have identified the deceased as Abhinaya, a resident of Manakudi in the Mayiladuthurai district, who served in the armed reserve.
According to police sources, Abhinaya was posted as an armed guard and had reported on Saturday for night shift in the collectorate, accompanied by another female woman.
Around 6 o’clock on Sunday, a shot was reportedly heard of the building. The other service in service rushed to the place and found Abhinaya lying on the floor, bleeding from a shot wound on the left side of her neck.
Senior police officials, including the vice -head inspector of the armed reserve of the police and an inspector, arrived on the spot and started investigating for the time being. The body of Abhinaya was sent to the Nagapattinam district Government Hospital for Post-Mortem exam.
The area where the incident took place has been sealed and a forensic investigation is underway. The cause of the shooting remains unclear.
The police did not confirm whether the incident was accidental or intentional and further investigation is underway.
This is a final incident with female police officers. In February, a female Sivaganga district was reportedly attacked within a police station by a political party leader and his employees. The same month a 25-year-old female police officer in Chennai was attacked and robbed of her golden chain near a train station. The suspect was caught by the public.
In September 2024, a deputy chief inspector of the police was attacked and she was drawn to her by demonstrators in the Virudhunagar district during a collision with law enforcement.
