Vitamin B found in full grains, dark leafy vegetables, such as kale and broccoli, eggs, fish and dairy products, seems to reduce the damage caused by the condition.

Glaucoma, which is suffered by nearly 700,000 people in the UK, is caused by a deviation in the drain system of the eye, causing liquid to accumulate, which increases the pressure on the optic nerve.

It is mainly that affects older adults and people with a genetic institution for the condition, it causes blurry vision and even blindness if it remains untreated.

Glaucoma is usually managed by reducing the pressure by eye drops, surgery or laser treatments.

The researchers gave supplements of vitamins B6, B9 and B12 to rats and mice with glaucoma.

In rats with a more aggressive form of the disease, it delayed damage to the optic nerve.

For mice with slower-developing glaucoma, the damage was completely stopped.

Scientists believe that this can be due to the increased pressure in the eye that the power of the retina to use vitamins that are crucial to maintaining a healthy vision.

Dr. James Tribble, from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, which conducted the study, said: “The results are so promising that we started a clinical study, in which patients are already being recruited.”

It is after a study from 2019 has shown that vitamin B3 could be effective in preventing glaucoma.

Scientists from the Jackson Laboratory in Maine, USA, added B3 to water given to mice that were genetically susceptible to the situation.
