Mayor Eric Adams celebrated a sharp fall in rifle over the five districts on Sunday, and said that New York City now sees fewer shootings than any other point in modern history.

“For five consecutive quarters we have a decrease in gunfared, but this quarter we had the lowest number of shootings in the recorded history,” said Adams on a WBLS appearance on Sunday morning.

NYPD -data show that shooting incidents fell by 23% during the first three months of 2025 from the same period last year. The police reported 140 total shooting incidents in the quarter.

Adams made arms violence a central issue in his mayor campaign from 2021. And while the NYPD has seen a dramatic turnover and scandal under his watch – including the resignation of three police commissioners – the mayor also regularly emphasized his push to get illegal firearms from the streets of the city.

According to the mayor, more than 1,600 guns have so far seized this year and more than 21,400 guns during his term of office.

Weapons still turn out to be a big problem in the city. Adams confirmed on Sunday that a police officer was shot out of service earlier in the morning in Astoria.

The mayor also said that he spoke with the son of Excenia Mette, the 61-year-old innocent bystander who was shot and killed in Harlem last week.

“Two people who shoot at each other and one of them was just arrested last year for stabbing people during a robbery,” said Adams. “These are the rotating door problems we are talking about.”

As trends remain down, the more shooting, according to NYPD data that New Yorkers are killed by a knife or a car rather than a gun. Last year, more New Yorkers were killed in stitches than shootings. City data also appears that more people were killed last year at traffic screnches than with rifle violence.
