While San Miguel Beer was in a difficult process on Wednesday evening to complete Barangay Ginebra in Smart Araneta Coliseum, the entire TNT team changed the boardroom of the PLDT offices in Makati City into a proverbial situations space.
That was where the Tropang 5G not only met their big bosses for a pre-final dinner, they also used the meeting to watch the game 7 Semis-Decree before they first made the coming PBA Philippine Cup Championship Series against the Bevermans.
“We didn’t want to end the night or go our own way without knowing who our opponent is,” said coach Chot Reyes, who has the chance to complete a Grand Slam 14 seasons of his last shot – and against the same franchise. ‘We made [the night hitting] Two birds with one stone. ‘
Reyes said that the meeting also had some light moments, but there was also a realization of what could be for TNT, because it strives for a place in the PBA history with a historic triple crown.
After winning two titles at the expense of Ginebra in season 49, this time TNT will have another opponent in San Miguel, a team that wants to regain his status as the best in the most important conference of the PBA and re -experience an old role of the Spoiler 14 years ago.
That season, TNT had won the Philippine Cup and Commissioner’s Cup and a victory was shy to complete the performance against San Miguel, then known as Petron.
“I have already forgotten that,” said Reyes on Friday. “2011 is really ancient history for me, so it’s really not in my consciousness.” At that time, Reyes Jimmy Alapag, a young Jayson Castro, Kelly Williams had in his Prime and a Ryan Reyes who could guard several positions that led his team. But they couldn’t get the job done and the blaze boosters of Arwind Santos and Danny Ildefonso prevented a triple Kroonvegie with a game 7 winning.
Another subplot in the series was the elimination phase of the tournament, in which the Tropang 5G-Reel went to a 0-3 start with the matchup with the bastards, a potentially make-or-break scenario.
TNT not only won behind a 20-20 competition from Calvin or Tana Plus Late heroic deeds of Simon Enciso, it led to a run that resumed his final access to the ultimate stage of the PBA.
“We actually talked about that game among us,” said Reyes. “It was our first victory, and we thought it was crucial for us. If not, we would have gone 0-4 and it would have been very difficult for us [to get back on track].
“It was really a turning point and hopefully we can continue to find ways to compete against San Miguel,” he added.
Of course, the addition of Jordan Kop and the return of Brandon Ganuelas rosser from injury also added a low to TNT’s Run that was set up for possible reconciliation for that failed Grand Slam-Bid.
Reyes continued to play reluctantly when he was asked about that potential place in PBA Annals, but he acknowledged the need to face it with ‘disciplined thinking’.
“Just prepare your mentally and make sure you don’t allow your mind to wander,” said Reyes. “And that is completely under my control, it does not do with something external interference, that is entirely in my control.
“So I constantly strengthen the things I do, and that I also remember the players to shorten your vision to what is in the front now,” he added.
