The US reported 1,288 measles shops this year – the highest number in 33 years, according to the latest figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The last time the US saw more measles cases, was in 1992, eight years before the disease was eliminated in the country.

“We see a lot more measles transfer than we are used to,” we say Caitlin Rivers. She is the director of the Center for Outbreak Response Innovation at Johns Hopkins University, who has his own measles dashboard.

“Measles is one of the most infectious diseases that are known in humans. And more importantly, it can be prevented. And that is why we really hate to see this revival of a virus to be prevented,” says Rivers.

Texas Outbreak burns case numbers

Since the beginning of the year, measles affairs have been confirmed by more than three dozen States plus the district of Columbia. The biggest outbreak is by far in Texas. The State reported 753 measles shops this year. 155 people were admitted to the hospital about the US and three people died.

And although the Texas outbreak has been considerably delayed throughout the country, Rivers says that the US is now seeing more cases every week than in previous years.

The Texas outbreak began in January. At one point, says Rivers, the State reported 15 to 20 new cases of measles a day, so that the fear was called that if the outbreak continued the US, the status would lose “elimination”, which is a technical term in public health, which means that the disease has not had a constant transfer for a period of 12 months or longer. She says that this is now less likely, since the state only reports a handful of cases a week.

But that does not mean that it will not happen in the near future, says Dr. Adam RatnerA doctor in infectious diseases in children in New York City and the author of Booster Shots, a history of the fight against measles.

“We are in the risk of losing our measles elimination status, if not this year, almost certainly in the coming years,” he says.

Ratner points to kindergarten vaccination rates, which have fallen nationally and are currently 92.7%. In some communities, vaccination rates are much lower, so that chances for measles are distributed. The CDC says that a threshold of 95% vaccination speed is needed to protect communities against measles outbreaks.

“What we see now is, since the hesitation of vaccine has grown, especially during and after the Covid Pandemie, those outbreaks become more frequent and bigger,” says Ratner.

Permanent effects

The milestone of measles comes in the same week that some of the leading medical associations of the country health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. have sued and accused him of what they characterize as an attempt to undermine the confidence in vaccines among the American public.

In a statement to NPR, spokesperson Andrew Nixon of Health and Human Services said: “CDC continues to recommend MMR vaccines as the best way to protect against measles. The decision to vaccinate is personal.” He added that the CDC vaccines will continue to provide to communities that have to do with outbreaks as requested.

Before widespread vaccination eliminated the disease in the US, almost everyone received measles in childhood. And between 400 to 500 children died of the disease every year. It can also cause permanent disabilities – the disease is still an important cause of blindness worldwide.

This year, says Rivers, 1 in 8 cases in the US has led to hospitalization.

“So although many people regard measles as a mild disease and for the most part it is, it can also cause serious illness,” says Rivers. “That is an important memory of parents who are on the fence that this virus is definitely something that is worthy.”
