Kraft signs were found on the body of Manojit Mishra, the Prime accused in the Gangrape case of South Calcutta Law College, pointing to signs of resistance by the survivor during the attack, a police source said. According to the source, the figures were identified during a medical-legal investigation that was conducted on Sunday.

The police quoted, quoting doctors who investigated the suspect, that research updates in crime were revealed from scratch marks on the body of Mishra.

The injuries described as scratches were reportedly inflicted during the alleged crime, which suggests that the survivor was fighting while he was attacked in the Hogeschoolgebouw.

The police said that the scratch marks, probably caused by fingernails, correspond to the description of the survivor of events. The alleged attack took place on the evening of 25 June in a room used by the university protection.

A city court expanded the police -guardianship of the three most important accused -Manojit Mishra, a former student and a Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad leader; and Zaib ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee, both current students – by eight days, until 8 July. The three were arrested on 26 June and were initially sent back to four days in police detention.

Pinaki Banerjee, a guard to the college and the fourth accused in the case, was arrested on Saturday and was returned to police detention until 2 July. His detention was further extended until July 4 after the court had rejected his bail complete, despite the argument of his lawyer that he had no earlier criminal and was employed during the incident.

As the investigation increases, the authorities of the South Calcutta Law College took disciplinary measures by terminating the temporary employment of Mishra and to expel the two co-accused student. Mishra’s position in the institution was based on an earlier recommendation from the administrative body, which met on Tuesday to complete these decisions.

The Commission also decided to recommend the cancellation of membership of Mishra’s Bar Council, because he is mentioned as a practicing criminal lawyer at the Alipore Police and Sessions Court on his social media accounts.

Within the courtroom, the defense stopped submitting bail for the three primary accused, but the court appealed to ensure that media report does not harm the trial. In the meantime, the public prosecutor and investigative officer asked for an extension of guardianship to further question the suspect that the court granted.

The Kolkata police have also discovered new leads during the investigation. A special research team of nine members (SIT) investigated the telephone conversations (CDRs) of the accused and discovered that Manojit Mishra had a telephone conversation with the vice-director of the college, Dr. Nayna Chatterji, on the morning after the incident. The police have since interviewed the vice director twice to understand the nature of that conversation.

The police also grabbed CCTV images from a local medical store, which showed that Zaib Ahmed bought an inhalator for the survivor at the time she was reportedly tortured. The owner of the pharmacy told the police that Zaib offered for the first time to split the payment between cash and UPI, but eventually paid the full amount online after the retailer refused partial payment. This supports the earlier explanation of the survivor that her hospital care was refused and only received an inhaler after she had asked for help for breathlessness.

Digital evidence, including CCTV images, mobile data and call records, is now confirmed by medical-legal reports and the testimony of the survivor. Police sources confirmed that all this evidence corresponds to the report of the survivor of crime.

Protests continued to grow outside the courtroom. A large group of students from South Calcutta Law College and nearby institutions organized demonstrations that demanded the security measures on campus. Marching from the college to Gariahat Crossing, battens and sing slogans, which called for justice and institutional accountability.

A student asked for the lack of safety at the university band and said: “Our parents sent us to the university and trusted that the authorities would guarantee our safety. What did we get back?”

At the Alipore Court complex, the accused were produced in court through virtual mode to prevent confrontation with protesters. Members of the legal cell of the BJP of the Alipore Court Lawyers’ Union also submitted a memorandum in which it was asked that no lawyer represents the suspect before the court.

The police have repeated that the case remains intensive investigation, with further interrogation of the accused and witnesses who were expected in the coming days.
