The strange (and impossible) record of the ladies’ volleyball competition: those sets that only lasted a minute

A minute may seem like a rather limited time, but according to the Pooh and their famous song it is enough to try to overcome a loving disappointment. What about the female volleyball instead? The competition has a very interesting section on its website where you can find curiosities and records with regard to the races that are held historically, both in A1 and in A2. Too bad that some of these statistics let the nose turn a little.

This is the case of the ranking of the sets that last less, dominated by two games that both have played recently. What do they have in common? The partly would have lasted only a minute, a timing that is not logical, even in the case of a fraction of the game ended 25-0. The scoreboards of these meetings do not help to clarify the mystery. At the top of the special ranking is Marsala-Soverrato, played on November 9, 2022 and valid for the Serie A2 championship.

The 3-0 for Soverato would have won with a literal lightning first set: the 25-20 for the Calabrians would in fact be reached after the aforementioned 60 seconds, openly something impossible. The rest of the partialities was then recorded by the Women’s Volleyball League with more real timing, 24 and 20 minutes to be precise. The same applies to Catania-Pinerolo of December 19, 2021, also valid for the A2 series. The 3-1 of the Piedmontese would also arrive thanks to the second set – precisely conquered by Pinerolo – ended with the score of 25-18 after the usual enigmatic minute.

And what about the other games that are part of the list, because they are talking about gambling fractions that lasted between 2 and 7 minutes? It is not better with the longest sets ever, as well as testified by the almost two hours scored by the first part of Perugia-Novara of 28 October 2001 (Serie A1). The total 113 minutes of the start set are at least as incredible as the other two, which in both cases would have been very fast (0 minutes). In short, there are definitely some confused data that must be corrected as quickly as possible.
