Victoria’s Goulburn Valley is known as the food bowl of Australia, but it will soon be known as the home of the gigantic pear.
A group of managers argue for a three -storey high gigantic pear that is built in Shepparton to celebrate the proud horticultural history of the region.
Chairman of the steering committee and former fruit melter Rocky Varapodio said that the gigantic pear would recognize the industry that would help the area in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
“The plan is to have an interactive representation in it, so that you know that the story about horticulture in our region can be told and how important it has been”, “,
Said varapodio.
With 90 percent of the Australian pears that were grown in the Goulburn -Valley, the fruit was an obvious choice.
Early estimates suggest that the project could cost $ 1.3 million, and the group is looking for support from the government and stakeholders to bring the idea to life.
“It’s really in the provisional design phase,” said Mr. Varapodio.
A report commissioned by the group suggests that the milestone could attract thousands of visitors and can inject more than $ 2 million in the local economy every year.
“The answer was great. People we have placed the idea to really see the advantage to tell this story through an attraction,” said Mr. Varapodio.
Powerful icons

“If they reflect something really unique or important to a place, such as the proud history of Shepparton as a pear capital of Australia, they become powerful tools for destination burning and stories,” said Mrs. Douglass.
“They help create a feeling of place, spark curiosity and often become loved symbols of community identity.“
She said that a big pear could not only help to celebrate the agricultural legacy of the region, but also to offer a playful, memorable experience for visitors.
“These types of attractions usually do well because they are accessible, divisible and offer a unique photo option that fits directly into the local story.”

he said.
“This steady intake of visitors has contributed to the local economy by creating jobs and supporting surrounding companies such as cafés, hotels and stores.”
Mr Lockman said that the icon had become a symbol of regional identity and pride, which put the region on the national map.
