Ben Duckett revealed that he felt “goose bumps” after he had seen Ollie Pope the best bowler in the world and appeared in Headingley with an undefeated century.

Pope was central to an excellent day of ultracompetitive test cricket against India, ending with exactly 100 not out when England fought their corner under pressure in this Rothesay series opener.

He walked outside to hit the second afternoon with everything stacked against him-India with 471 runs from the first innings and the incomparable Jasprit Bumrah who had just made a short work by Zak Crawley with the new ball.

With gray clouds overhead and spotlights needed to improve visibility in the middle, it was a very unsavory situation for a player who came into play with his place under control.

A few hours later, after he had led his side to 209 for three, it only felt the suggestion that he could be replaced at any time that soon was in the extreme imaginative.

“They were goose bumps when he got his hundred, you could see what it meant for him,” said Duckett, who shared a 122 stand with the vice-captain.

“He probably couldn’t walk in more difficult circumstances, Jasprit ran the hill with the lights on.

“There is no better feeling than that, scoring 100 against that attack after he came out for four. You can see that as he celebrated, but it not only meant a lot to him, it also meant a huge amount in the dressing room.”

A lot was made from a theoretical head-to-head between pope and rising star Jacob Bethell, a notion-captain Ben Stokes hit the eve of the game while threw his full support behind the sitting.

The selection debate was too loud to avoid, but the Surrey man perhaps has been in control in the most public way, in hand for a sale of the public in Yorkshire on Saturday.

“We are very good at keeping things in the dressing room, but you can clearly hear the noise from outside,” Duckett admitted.

“We have no discussions in the dressing room about who is going to play. But the way Popey was dealt with has been fantastic. The barrel together and proves why he is number three of England and does what he does.”

Duckett had a chair in the front row when Bumrah threw everything he had in England. The unpredictable Paceman ended with three to 48 of 13 electric overs, but could easily have doubled his migration given the number of edges, opportunities and almost missers that he generated.

The last of them saw him Harry Brook being caught on a duck to be called alone for a no-ball, a late intestinal pot, but he will definitely be back for more.

“He is the best bowler in the world,” said Duckett, who was eventually bent before 62.

“He is good in India on the flatest pitches ever and, when he comes off the hill with the lights on, winds up both sides, it is difficult.

“I feel that we minimized the damage early, it could have been a lot worse today, so we are pretty happy with the position in which we find ourselves.”
