Tasmanian liberals have promised to make it easier for Tasmanians to gain access to the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD disorders (Hyperactivity Disorder) by allowing ADHD disorders (ADHD) by general practitioners.

On Saturday morning, Prime Minister Jeremy Rockliff announced that if re -elected, the liberals would expand the reach of Tasmanian GPs to enable them to diagnose, treat and manage ADHD for both children and adults.

Liberal Lyons, candidate Steph Cameron, whose six -year -old son Bruce ADHD, appeared next to Mr Rockliff, became emotionally when discussing the challenges it had presented. Mrs. Cameron also has ADHD.

“I look at children who have ADHD … and often they can be heard that they are the naughty children,” she said.

“If they are told that they are naughty or that they are wrong for their entire youth, it has a huge impact on the way they learn.“

What changes?

Currently, in Tasmania it can be time -consuming and expensive to find a diagnosis and treatment for ADHD. Waiting for pediatric reviews can be 18 months or more.

Last year Tasmanian GPs Kate Bendall told the ABC that it could cost more than $ 800 and cost more than $ 800 to get a diagnosis.

When the State parliament last year conducted an investigation into how ADHD is assessed and treated in Tasmania, it received 60 entries, many of which increased the lack of available medical professionals.

Mr Rockliff said that the promise Tasmanian GPs would enable to offer diagnostic and treatment options instead of referring patients with adult and child to specialists.

“The demand for ADHD support has grown considerably in recent years,”

he said.

“We must ensure that we move with that need and ensure that we have more flexibility and opportunities.”

He said that the announcement would offer better, cheaper and faster access for the families looking for help.

GPS ‘Probably the best’ to diagnose ADHD patients

The announcement only comes one day after the South Australian Labor government had made a similar promise.

It also reflects changes that have been made to New South Wales and Queensland in recent years.

The Tasmanian chairman of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, Toby Gardner, said the peak body welcomed the announcement.

“This is something we have been arguing for a long time at national level,” he said.

Dr. Gardner said that the long waiting times for the diagnosis of children can dramatically influence their educational results.

He said that if adults had no access to care and treatment, this could cost the national economy in lost productivity in the workplace.

“As GPS, we are probably best to diagnose and manage these patients because we follow them all their lives,”

he said.

Mrs Cameron, who has ADHD, said that if she could have walked into a doctor’s clinic and get the care that her son needed, this would have been “life -changing”.

“To get the support [parents] Need when they ask about it, without a doubt or doubt in their thoughts … it’s so important, “she said.

“It would have been life changing for me and I think it will be life -changing for my son.“

What have other parties said?

Labor leader Dean Winter on Saturday also said that his party supported the policy.

Greens -candidate for Bas, Cecily Rosol, said that she was on parliamentary research into ADHD and supported the policy.

“Having GPS that can set an ADHD diagnosis is a wise move that will improve the diagnosis, reduce waiting times and ensuring that people can get the treatment and support they need,” said Mrs. Rosol.

Mr Rockliff said that if his government was re-elected, this would also change the legislation to allow interstate recipes that ADHD medication can be provided in Tasmania.
