NHS waving lists for ADHD diagnosis and support have led to a ‘significant’ increase in the use of non -regulated private providers, has said a report.

The ADHD Taskforce, commissioned by NHS England with the support of the government, has published an interim report in which the system for diagnosing and managing the neurological disorder to be revised.

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is characterized by patterns of restlessness, impulsivity and difficulty concentrating on one thing, with assessment and treatment that is usually supplied by highly specialized doctors.

But the report warned: ‘Inability to gain access to NHS services has led to a significant growth in the use of private providers that are not regulated, resulting in dual access to services, diagnosis and treatment; One for those who can pay and another for those who can’t.

“This drives health inequality and links to disproportionate effects and results in education and legal systems, employment and health.”

Experts said waiting times for NHS ADHD services ‘are escalated and unacceptably long’, whereby the demand for services will continue to rise ‘very likely’.

Professor Anita Thapar, chairman of the ADHD Taskforce, said: “We must have this right – to ensure that people get early diagnosis and support.”

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Social Care said: “The report in the state of the NHS has explained how serious the delays have become for people waiting for a diagnosis of a attention deficit disorder.”
