New Captain Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal struck centuries when India stacked at 359-3 after losing the throw and punished an Under-Par English bowling display on day one of the first tests in Headingley.
Gill (127NO of 175) played with great tranquility when he became the fifth India skipper who reached a century in his first test, a group that also includes Virat Kohli, the man he replaced at no. 4 in the Batting Line-Up after the recent retirement of the legend.
Jaiswal (101 out of 158) noted his fifth test one hundred and third versus Ben Stokes alone – which he beat after suffering on forearm cramps – after he smoked two double tons when India beat England at the beginning of 2024 with 4-1 in the beginning of 2024.
The left -handed opener, who has now scored for centuries on his test debut, as well as his first games in Australia and England, was bent by a beauty of Stokes – The Pick of the Seamers – after tea but Gill and Rishabh Pant (65NO off 102) combined for an impeccable partnership of 138 deliveries.
Gill, whose Ton was a total of his sixth, but first outside of Asia, the cornerstone proved while making the perfect start of his leadership, after he was mentioned as the successor of the now retired Rohit Sharma.
Pant passed 3000 tests and hit a rusty Chris Woakes for six in the last, so England Schipper left Stokes with a lot to think – including whether he made the right call on the pitch.
Has England made a mistake by choosing Bowl?
The statistics said that Stokes was right to bowling with the Headingley -Pitch who traditionally did not deteriorate, but the heat caused strong batting conditions and Jaiswal and Kl Rahul (48), initially locked to width and covered deliveries while England chased Wickets.
There was enough exercise for the PACE attack – which includes the experienced Stokes and Woakes and the Greener Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue – but the openers of India bundled them until shortly before lunch with a score of 91.
The couple mixed aggressive intention with careful batting – in particular Rahul, a number of attractive drives, while he wondered why his test average is in the low 1930s.
However, he was then caught on the ride, giving Carse away to slide while the Bowler took his first wicket for home test after 27 in five games abroad this winter, before Stokes had taken care of the debutant Saudharsan on the bone side for a nervous four-ball duck later the field institutions later the field institutions.
Carse could have removed Jaiswal LBW after lunch 45, but switched, and the Slagman continued to complete a century of 96 balls in a Carse in which he hit two coruscing off -side four – the side of the wicket where he scored 88 percent of his runs – and also pauted for a second time because of his arm lamps.
Jaiswal and New India, Captain Gill, set up 129 for the third Wicket with the last to reach fifty of 56 balls with a drawn four off -tongue, the same bowler who was broken over the point of Jaiswal for six.
Stokes impresses on a hard day for England
It was not surprising that it was Stokes, who played his first game since the Zimbabwe test in May and only second since he tore his Hamstring Bowling against New Zealand in December who broke the Kill-Jaiswal Standard, who threw the last one around the Wicket.
Stokes then came close to removing trousers with a diabolical slower ball and also hit the left -handed out of his outer edge during a fascinating battle, with pants that threw an early shot when he creamed the second ball he stuck opposite Stokes’ head for four.
Pant then largely went into his shell – a wild spinner of England Shoaib Bashir who tried to catch Zak Crawley in vain and a towering six that India brought past 300 were two of the pair of bizarre moments – when he helped skipper to help skipper until his century. Only then did the typical pants dare really come out.
Bashir was a bright spot for England on the day, which offers control, as well as dip, flight, turn and bouncing, while he registered figures from 0-66 of 21 overs after seeing Jaiswal’s first delivery for four.
The teams play for the newly created Anderson-Detulkar trophy, named after the greats of the James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar game, who are the most productive seam bowler and highest run scorer in the history of test cricket respectively.
England went into the series as favorites against an inexperienced touring side, but the first day in Leeds was a memory, if we needed it that India is full of talent.
