To try the creams, scientists brought a small amount on the back of volunteers before they shed a lamp on the patch to simulate the rays of the sun.

In another test, scientists took a sample of the cream and spread it on a glass plate to immediately measure UV’s absorption.
To pass, the sunscreen had to provide at least one third of the claimed SPF.
SPF is measurement of the duration that you can be in the sun before you are burned.
For example, a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 takes 30 times longer to damage your skin compared to no protection at all.
If a product has not shown the level of SPF that it claimed to have on its first test, which one? repeated the test. If it passed the second time, a third test was done.
