Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan recorded an enormous upset in the elimination of world no. 1 and title defender Jannik Sinner 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday to continue to the quarterfinals in the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle, Germany.

Bublik, ranked no. 45, had lost earlier this month to Sinner in the French open quarterfinals. The Italian had lost no other player than Carlos Alcaraz in Spain, who defeated him in the Paris final and in Rome in May, since August 2024.

The 2023 champion in Halle, Bublik, registered 36 winners (including 15 Azen) and saved 8 of 9 breaking points while converting 2 of 6.

Second placed Alexander Zverev van German gathered along Lorenzo Sonego of Italy with 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2) and the seventh-placed Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic Dominated Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan 6-2, 6-3 in 59 minutes. Tomas Martin Etcheverry van Argentina drove the fourth placed Andrey Rublev van Russia 6-3, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (6); Eighth placed Karen Khahanov van Russia lowered the Canadian Felix auger-aliassy 6-3, 1-6, 6-3; and Flavio Cobolli of Italy eliminated Canada’s Denis Shapovalov 7-6 (2), 4-6, 7-6 (5).

HSBC championships

The top-ranking Carlos Alcaraz had to fight before he came up with his career-high 15th consecutive victory, in which Fellow Spaniard Jaume Munar 6-4, 6-7 (7), 7-5 fell to reach the quarterfinals in Queen’s Club in London.

Alcaraz wasted two match points in the second set of Tiebreker and had to gather from 2-4 in the third set of a three-hour match, 23 minutes. He had 49 winners and converted 4 of the 7 breaking point opportunities, up to 2 of the 12 for Munar.

Next to Alcaraz is the French lucky loser Arthur Rinder Knech, who drove the American Reilly Opelka 7-5, 7-6 (3) in the round of 16. Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic-decorated Canadian Gabriel Diallo 6-4, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.
