Manchester City started their club World Cup campaign with a 2-0 win over the Moroccan team Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia.
Phil Foden was the star of the match, scored one goal and set up the other. He looked sharp and confident, a big change after a difficult season in which he struggled with injuries and lost his place in the English team.
City manager Pep Guardiola started two new signing sessions – Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki. Reijnders stood out in midfield and showed calmness and control. Cherki also looked good in attack.
Foden scored after just one minute and 43 seconds. Later his corner Jeremy Doku helped score the second goal.
The game was played in Lincoln Financial Field, an NFL stadium in Philadelphia. About 37,000 fans came to watch, which was a decent audience for a kick-off of the lunchtime weekday lunch.
However, the game was not perfect. A fan ran into the field to protest about animal rights, and Wydad fans had a red smoking bomb in the second half, making it difficult to see the field a few moments.
City ended the game with 10 men after the young defender Rico Lewis was sent late.
Guardiola is expected to spend more than £ 300 million this summer, and there are already some major changes. Jack Grealisk and Kyle Walker did not travel to the US and will soon be allowed to leave the club.
But this competition was completely about Foden. After a tough few months he showed that he was ready to fight for his place again.
