Ice baths – loved by millions of wellness circles for their supposed health benefits – can make you fat.

Also known as cold plungs, they are linked to reducing stress, calming muscles, stimulating mental health and even loss of fat.

But new research suggests that ice bath sessions can actually ensure that people get thicker in the long term, by eating them too much.

In a study that looks at how water temperature influences appetite, participants were immersed in three Polish until their breastbone with the water otherwise heated in each bath (61 F, 79 F, 95 F).

After a 30 -minute bath session, the volunteers were offered unlimited parts of pasta.

Repeated tests of the research showed that participants who were in the coldest swimming pools consumed more food than those who bathe in warmer temperatures.
