People who use marijuana take themselves to twice the risk of a heart attack, a stroke or die of heart conditions.

Researchers from the University of California have assessed 24 studies with 200 million people to examine the relationship between weeds and heart disease, stroke and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) (ACS) – a group of heart disease in which there is a reduced or blocked blood flow to the heart, such as a heart attack.

They discovered that there was a 29 percent higher risk of ACS, a 20 percent higher risk of stroke and double the risk of dying of cardiovascular disease, including coronary heart disease, heart failure and irregular heartbeats.

Cardiovascular disorders are the number one murderer of America and almost 1 million people die every year.

Because of his harmful side effects, the researchers call on supervisors to treat marijuana -like tobacco – not criminalized, but very discouraged – and increase the consciousness of the risks for people exposed to marijuana smoke in the second -hand.

The CDC estimates that about 52 percent of Americans once tried marijuana at least once and a 2024 study showed that almost 18 million people use it daily or almost daily, an increase of about 1 million three decades ago.

The researchers wrote: “Legalizing the drug and expanding its medical use worldwide have probably contributed to in -depth changes in the general perception of cannabis and the overall increase in cannabis consumption.”

However, they warned the study ‘raises serious questions about the assumption that cannabis imposes little cardiovascular risk.’

In the United States, marijuana is completely legal – for recreational and medicinal use – in 29 states. It is completely illegal in four states.

Laws in the remaining situations are mixed, which means that the medicine can be permitted for medicinal use, only permitted in the form of CBD oil, are decriminalized or are a combination of these.

Included in the studies, which varied from 2016 to 2023, were people from 19 to 59 years old.

A well-known limitation of the study was that the use of marijuana was reported on different scales itself, which means that it was difficult to measure how much marijuana use was associated with the risks.

The researchers also did not specify whether the exposure to marijuana came from smoking the medicine or other forms of consumption.

From a similar study published in the Jama Cardiology magazine last month, discovered that people who smoked marijuana or had imposed edible substances at least three times a week, had their blood vessels that are vital for supplying oxygen and nutrients from the heart to every organ and tissue.

This influences the ability of the blood vessels to dilate, increasing the risk of arterial plaque, heart attacks and strokes.

The study showed that marijuanarokers had a 42 percent reduction in vascular function than checks, while the edible users had a reduction of 52 percent compared to those who never used cannabis.

Although earlier studies have linked cannabis smoking to heart conditions, the study of May 2025 was one of the first to show heart damage through food that contained THC, the psychoactive component of Cannabis.

The most recent study, published in the Journal Heart, stated: “Given the current situation and recent trends in cannabis use, the need to tackle specifically these recent developments was crucial.”

Based on their findings, the team concluded that the use of marijuana should be included in physician patient discussions when it comes to cardiovascular disease and risk of life and prevention.

They said: ‘Cannabis must be included in the framework for preventing clinical cardiovascular disease. This also applies to the prevention of cardiovascular disease included in the regulation of cannabis markets. Effective product warnings and education about risks must be developed, required and implemented.

‘Cardiovascular and other health risks must be considered in the regulation of permitted product and marketing design as the proof base grows. Nowadays, these regulations are aimed at setting up the legal market with miserable neglect of minimizing health risks. ‘

However, researchers noted various restrictions, including a bias in most of the studies included, lack of information or missing data and inaccurate measures for cannabis exposure.

Moreover, most of the studies recorded were observational and different data used.

They added that “how these changes influence cardiovascular risk, require clarification” and that further research is needed into ‘cannabis -related side effects’.
