Members of the fashion family, Share “Shay” Wood and Kells Barnett, spoke with Black undertaking About various entrepreneurs are, returning to the neighborhood who raised them, and what the next step is for the Harlem Haberdashery Boutique and Fashion House became lifestyle brand.

What have some of the most meaningful successes of the “for Harlem” initiative?

Barnett: The first official program of “Parage for Harlem” was a “FEED 500” program where I made lunches and only fed the homeless, Everyone who was hungry fed.

Community is built around people who help each other. I think people think that help is when someone looks homeless, and I am: ‘no’, it is someone who needs something. Since then it has grown into toy drives, school offerings and a PROM drive. We have launched a pilot, the college shower.

Tell it Public more about the Harlem Haberdashery brand.

Harlem Haberdashery is our boutique. It is a kind of hub for our fashion family. We have an adapted clothing line, 5001 flavors. We have been working with artists and entertainers for more than 30 years.

The Harlem Haberdasher brand has many branches, including tailor -made alkaline water and customized spirits. What did you motivate to go beyond fashion?

Barnett: I don’t think we will ever stop trying to expand to other categories. That is what all fashion houses do, but we will never get into something that we don’t like at all.

Wood: Lifestyle is logical when it comes to fashion. We have not reached the top of the fashion world, but we have conquered that a bit as much as we can. If there is a chance that connects, it is a bit easy. The customized spirits were absolutely simple. When you have party events where people get dressed, it is the same events where our spirits are served, the same with customized alkaline water.

This marks the ninth annual Harlem Haberdashery Gala. What inspired the launch of the event?

Wood: We have a social responsibility. So we had to have a philanthropic arm. The Gala is a love letter to Harlem. To pay tribute to how we grew up, the style, the architecture. So it really became a party with a goal.

Barnett: It is an honor to be a black entrepreneur in the community that you raised. [Harlem] Doesn’t have many black galas. Galas where you don’t feel a visitor in the room.

What do growth and economies of scale look like for the Harlem Haberdashery brand?

Barnett: We have such a diverse group in our family that we could get into categories of which people never even thought black people would venture.

Wood: I have always imagined a lifestyle brand. We have just started our podcast, Family style. We have different personalities, brands and products. Wat wIt is a bit of diversity and creativity to bring to the table, just like a family style meal.

Barnett: In the beginning we were looking for podcast networks. But we have our own videographer and production team and we photograph in the Harlem Haberdashery Boutique. For years we tried to let people do what we could do for ourselves. We have just decided to bundle our resources together and to do it ourselves.
