Chappy got his name after a police name from the police. It is a nod to the fact that the seal was saved near Chapel Street, a pizzeria-rich area in about a mile from the campus of Yale University and various blocks of the nearest coastline.
Experts have said that he probably followed his instincts of the Long Island Sound – and potential threats such as bad weather and other seals – but disappeared when he ventured deeper and deeper into the city. He was seen a few times in the New Haven area in the days before his rescue on February 16.
The aquarium said he was estimated in just a few weeks old and turned out to be “listless, dehydrated and in thin condition”, with a weight of only 28 pounds (compared to the average newborn gray seal of 35 pounds of the newborn gray seal).
At the time, employees told NPR that Chappy was on liquid therapy and an individualized treatment plan, received the fish formula and ‘Fish School (where we teach them that fish are) get daily’. “
The aquarium shared photos and videos of the puppy Facebook page In the following days, the milestones of Chappy celebrate – like his First fishing party And a day he gave staff “What Sass” – But warning that his prognosis was” still guarded. “

The staff said his immune system showed signs of weakness and that he was treated for pneumonia and gastrointestinal problems.
The hope was that Chappy would be strong enough in the coming months to return to the ocean.
But the aquarium said in a statement On Monday, Chappy’s condition took a turn for the worst “when he was switched to whole fish and started to digestive difficulties.”
“Unfortunately, despite all the efforts, his gastrointestinal problems were too serious to treat, and he collapsed with his illness,” said it.
A necropsia performed after the death of Chappy found mesenteric torsion, a life -threatening turning of the intestines that cuts the blood supply to the gastrointestinal tract. The condition that can influence people, dogs, pigs and cattle can “be” challenging to diagnose and has a bad prognosis, “said the aquarium.
“Moreover, although not related to Chappy’s immediate death cause, small pieces of plastic were found in his stomach that emphasized that Marien Puin, especially plastics, poses for marine animals,” said it.

The World Wildlife Fund estimates that Plastic pollution kills 100,000 marine mammals every year or through intake or entanglement.
The aquarium said this week that they were destroyed by the death of Chappy, but “proud that they could give Chappy the best possible chance.” And they thanked everyone who sent a good wish and words of support, both on social media and in handmade maps from all over the world.
“The reality of working with stranded animals can sometimes be difficult, but Chappy was surrounded by love to the end,” it added.
The New Haven Police Department Likewise, everyone thanked everyone That contacted and added: “It was great to see how many people this story touched.”
It praised the aquarium ‘for their efforts to help our small buddy’ and encouraged people to donate to the aquarium Animal rescue program Hoping to help more stranded animals.
