The Australian golfer Jason Day risked the wrath of NFL fans in two large American cities with some striking comments about the team that he supports.

In the day three of the US Open in Oakmont, Pennsylvania-on 20 minutes’ drive from the city of Pittsburgh-Werd asked if he would pay tribute to the Steelers with his yellow-and-black bag.

His answer left NFL fans stunned and even day knew he was open to criticism when he said it.

“No, unfortunately not,” said day laughing at his bag. ‘I do love Pittsburgh Sports in general, although I do live in Columbus, Ohio and my favorite football team is the Cleveland Browns.

‘Although they have a rivalry, my second favorite team Pittsburgh is. I know I will get a lot of play for that. But yes, today I have the Pittsburgh colors, I leave it at that. ‘

Saying that they have a rivalry was a big understatement from the day. The rivalry between Browns-Staalers is the oldest in the NFL, with the two teams playing at least twice a season in the AFC North.

The clip was shared by US Open -broadcaster NBC on X and fans were inevitably stunned by the Day’s answer.

“I have to be close to an unforgivable attack,” read one answer, while the other said: “Not a real football man. Can’t have a 2nd favorite team. Absolutely not your rival. ‘

Last season the browns struggled poorly and ended the campaign with a miserable 3-14 record, while last year the Steelers lost in the first round of the play-offs to the Baltimore Ravens.

The browns chose two quarterbacks in the recent NFL design in Green Bay, including Shedeur Sanders in round six – after some had supported him to be taken in the top three.

The Steelers have also changed a signal detail. Russell Wilson and Justin Fields both left and this time they will have Aaron Rodgers at Quarterback, where the 41-year-old recently signed a one-year-old deal with the organization.

In the meantime, in round three of the US Open, Dag goes on three-over for the tournament-a respectable score given that only three players had an Under-Par score that went to the moving day.
