6 ways to tell if you are a great leader | Entrepreneur

All successful leaders, from Front-Line Supervisors to Senior Executives, want to constantly know whether their leadership style is effective. Great leaders are humble enough to know that it might not be, empathetic enough to take care of and sufficiently driven to make adjustments so that this do.

After having spent 15 years in leadership and evaluating the effectiveness of leaders at all different levels, I have learned that there are a few litmus parties that always give away large leadership. Under great leadership, this is what you will notice.

1. People are engaged

There are hundreds of ways to measure involvement, so I will only tackle a few. When leadership works, people are happy. They want to come and work, and they do. Teams with strong leadership have a lower expansion and vacancy rates than teams that don’t. There is truth in the cliché: “People don’t leave their company, they leave their boss.”

Under strong leadership, people are not only happy to show up and do their work; They are also very involved. They participate and ask questions in group meetings, town halls and open forums. Silence in these institutions is a dangerous sign that something is wrong. When people do not share their thoughts and opinions easily, it is usually because they do not feel safe and safe to do this, or they do not believe that someone really listens.

When people are willing to give their opinion, it is a sign that they pay attention to what is going on and to give the results. In environments where there is a lot of leadership, this involvement also happens proactively. When people are well guided, they do not wait reactive to be asked to contribute or step up – they can do volunteer work.

2. Promoting and/or changing roles

Great leadership can also be measured on the basis of the amount of growth and development. For years, as a leader, I not only mentioned my own performance on my CV – I mentioned the performance of my team. I knew the specific number of direct (and indirect) reports that had been promoted in more senior or complex roles among me. They were selected for progress because they were well trained, mature and developed.

Under Great Leadership, employees invest in their future by going back to school, getting certifications and earning promotions. You will find people about development plans and be able to articulate what they would like to do afterwards or where they are working. If that happens consistently, it is because strong leadership has encouraged it.

3. People spend time together

In situations where leadership is bad, people go to silos and stay there. They do not work regularly (and willingly) together. They do not invite other groups or teams to brainstorming sessions to solve problems together. Instead, they treat things in a vacuum. If people are often alone – in their offices closed with the door, just skip food and key events – that is a bad sign. 4. People speak differently

People literally talk differently under great leadership. That’s because they have learned to think differently. First, their language gives away a win-win mentality. Among great leaders, people will use words like “we” or “our” versus “me”, “” I “or” my “. Great leaders encourage people to think worldwide, not locally. Under great leaders people see people themselves as part of a larger whole. So individuals see customers or goals not only their own but rather but rather.

They do not feel powerless, unable or uncertain about their ability to control their own success. 5. People innovate and fail

Under poor leadership, people are afraid of trying new things out of fear of making a mistake. They often feel that they should be perfect and fear that they will be punished because they are ‘wrong’. Among great leaders, people will experiment routinely and try things that have never been done before. They are confident and courageous enough to know that if they fail, it will just be a learning experience and that they will become stronger. They did not pack their identity in perfection and this allows them to be more creative than teams under bad leadership that focus in the past, doing things as they are always done.

6. People deliver results

Great leaders always get performance. They focus on behavior because they know they can control it. But they also ensure that those actions lead to results. Teams that have difficulty delivering results and performing well, especially over time, have bad leaders. That’s because great leaders practice what I call PDCA: plan, do, check and adjust. They take action, evaluate and shift the course if things don’t work. They do not accept the status quo. They work hard to improve things. As Michelangelo said, “No problem can tolerate the attack of sustainable thinking.” Good leaders know this, so although they can periodically stumble a roadblock or hit a roadblock, they come up with a road. They also teach others to do this. In general, if you have a team of people who score low on their annual performance assessments and are unable to reach their own key goals, you probably have a leadership problem. Under Great Leadership, the entire team does not only perform as a collective, but people also perform individually.

In the course of time, if you observe a team and notice these six things, you probably have strong, effective leadership at the helm. In cases where these things are not present, there is no doubt that it starts with the leader.
