The World Cup is over. Football season is here. The Seahawks and Patriots open camp tomorrow in preparation for the September 9 Super Bowl LX rematch that opens the season, as we preview in our Week 1 schedule guide. Seattle’s camp is being filmed for Hard Knocks on HBO, the first time a defending champion has been featured, which we covered in our Hard Knocks preview.
The Biggest Camp Storylines
Mahomes’ first full practices. Patrick Mahomes has been rehabbing his torn ACL since December 2025, and Kansas City’s entire season hinges on how he moves in pads. The Chiefs open full practices July 29 at Missouri Western State in St. Joseph, and every rep will be scrutinized. His chemistry with new acquisition Kenneth Walker III starts now.
The unsigned stars. Stefon Diggs and Jadeveon Clowney remain without teams as camps open. Both are former Pro Bowlers who could reshape a contender’s roster overnight, and the longer they wait, the more leverage shifts to the teams. History says both sign before the first preseason game.
Bijan Robinson’s contract. The Falcons’ star back is in camp but participating on a limited basis while his extension is negotiated. Atlanta cannot afford a full holdout, and Robinson’s camp status will be the most-watched contract story until it is resolved, a dynamic we explain in our franchise tag guide.
Rookie quarterback debuts. Fernando Mendoza, the No. 1 overall pick, takes his first NFL practice reps with the Raiders this week. Every snap will be measured against the franchise quarterback expectations that come with the $57.3 million contract we detailed in our rookie wage scale explainer.
What Happens in the Next Six Weeks
From now through the August 30 cutdown, 90-man rosters become 53, roughly 1,200 players across the league will lose their jobs, and every starting lineup will be decided.
