Sheffield Wednesday striker Jerry Yates has been a ‘decent’ signing, say EFL expert George Elek.
Sheffield Wednesday loaned the striker from Luton Town in the January transfer window. SWFC brought him in on a temporary basis until the end of the season.
Yates, 29, has made eight appearances for the Owls this season and has scored two goals. He has two years left on his contract at Kenilworth Road, which runs until June 2028, and he recently admitted in an interview with BBC Sheffield that he is unsure what the future holds for him at this stage.
Elek is impressed and said this on the Not The Top 20 Podcast YouTube: “Jerry Yates was a good signing for Wednesday. He is one of the reasons why they often score in games now, despite not getting anything out of it. He scored one against his old club (Derby County) after just seventeen minutes.”
Sheffield Wednesday were defeated 2-1 by Derby County this weekend. Yates managed to get himself on the scoresheet against the Rams at Pride Park, but Henrik Pedersen’s side could get nothing out of the game and slumped to another defeat.

Championship news
Sheffield Wednesday brought in Yates last winter to boost their attacking department. He gives SWFC more competition and depth at the top.
The Owls will soon have to start thinking about their future recruitment and could make a permanent move on Yates if possible. They will try to get themselves out League One the first time I asked.
Yates is an experienced player in the Football League and would not be a bad addition to the South Yorkshire team. However, their transfer plans are currently up in the air while ownership issues are resolved.
The Yorkshire-born man was snapped up by Luton Town in August last year. He found the net seven times in 25 appearances for the Hatters before they let him through the exit door.
Yates is a product of the Rotherham United academy. He has also had spells at Swindon Town, Blackpool, Swansea City and Derby County in the past.

Will Sheffield Wednesday sign Jerry Yates permanently from Luton Town?
Sheffield Wednesday’s chances of securing a full-time move for Yates depend on a number of different factors. SWFC needs new owners and once that is sorted they can turn their attention to bringing in some more quality for the next term.
Furthermore, if head coach Pedersen were to leave, the club could look at alternative targets. Luton Town also have a big voice and they could decide to keep him.
The Owls are back in action on Wednesday evening as they look to bounce back from their defeat to Derby County. They are behind Watford at Hillsborough for the play-off.
Their upcoming opponents had a break from competition last weekend. They beat Bristol City 2-1 at Ashton Gate in their last outing to keep their hopes of reaching the top six under Ed Still alive.
