When Gervonta “Tank” Davis was pulled from a scheduled showdown with Paul, “El Gallo” and MVP Promotions turned to Joshua. Many were surprised that Paul went from scheduled to fight a lightweight to a heavyweight. Some were even convinced that the fight would not ultimately happen, but it did indeed take place as advertised.
Joshua scored a sixth-round knockout victory over Paul, who avoided danger for most of the fight until he was exhausted. A straight right from Joshua broke Paul’s jaw.
In an interview with MMAFighting.comAndrei Arlovski said the loss of Paul was an important lesson.
“I didn’t like it, but Jake Paul had great conditioning through six laps,” Arlovski said. “Obviously he was walking around, it doesn’t matter. He has his broken jaw. It’s not good. A broken jaw in two places is going to take some time to heal and recover. We’ll see.”
“Hopefully, maybe, maybe not, he’ll get back into boxing. But for now, maybe he understands that people who spend 10, 15, 20 years in boxing and MMA, it’s not like you train hard like last month in a boxing gym or something, or you do MMA. People spend their lives there.”
Paul has said he is not done competing in the sport of boxing. He even has a lofty goal of becoming a champion, which experts say is a dream.
As for Joshua, he has endured tragedy since the victory over ‘El Gallo’. Joshua was awakened by a car accident that killed two of his close friends, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele. The former heavyweight champion recently spoke about the loss of his friends on his YouTube channel.
