Ryan Mason has been appointed as West Bromwich Albion head coach on a three-year contract until June 2028.
The arrival of Mason marks his first permanent senior management positions, after he had taken the reins twice in Tottenham on an interim basis after Jose Mourinho and Cristian Stellini Wee were fired in April 2021 and April 2023.
However, Stellini had replaced Antonio Conte a month earlier as the acting head coach, but supervised a series of only one victory in four games, which culminated in a humiliating 6-1 loss in Newcastle.
Otherwise, the former spurs player would have supervised the Academy of Tottenham in the first instance and specifically managed at the level under 19, before Conte appointed him as an assistant coach he continued under Ange Postecoglou.
His coaching experiences among some top managers led West Brom to take a chance to take him if their new manager at a three-year contract until June 2028, after they finished ninth in the championship and abused the last play-off place with four points.
In his first official statement as West Brom manager, Mason said that he was “absolutely excited” to get the chance to take the lead over a club with potential.
“This is a huge club with a fantastic infrastructure and an incredible fan base and I am enthusiastic about what we can achieve together.
“I spoke in detail on the board and those at the club I am convinced that Albion is the perfect place for me and I can’t wait to get started.
“I will bring a huge amount of enthusiasm, dedication and ambition and look for a positive future together at such a fantastic club.”
West Brom -chairman, Shilen Patel, added that he is ‘pleased’ to sign Mason that will be accompanied by Nigel Gibbs as an assistant head coach, while Sam Pooley will serve as the first team coach and head of men’s performance.
“We have performed a thoughtful and extensive search and Ryan always struck us under an incredibly strong group of candidates.
“We are pleased to be someone whose skills means that he has the construction to help us further determine elite standards in both preparation and player development for the first team and in all our team programs.
“His experiences and both a first team player and coach under some of the most respected spirits of the game, together with his time leading academic parties, will play an important role because we form a clear philosophy and a uniform identity at all levels on the Albion.”
Spurs chairman, Daniel Levy paid tribute to Mason for his work in North Londs as both player then coach.
“Ryan has been an integral part of Tottenham Hotspur for a number of years, both as a player and as a coach.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ryan for all his dedication and hard work over the years, and we wish him every success for the future.”
