In Bangladesh, law and order must be maintained at all costs: BNP’s Tarique Rahman

BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman on Saturday called for maintenance of law and order “at any cost” and sought cooperation from all in building a safe and humane Bangladesh.

Rahman’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) won a big victory on Friday with a majority of more than two-thirds in the historic parliamentary elections. The BNP leader becomes prime minister for the first time. He will replace interim government leader Muhammad Yunus.

At a press conference a day after the landslide victory in the thirteenth parliamentary election, Rahman said: “We need everyone’s cooperation to build a safe and humane Bangladesh. This time, everyone must play a responsible role in rebuilding the country.” “No injustice should be done to anyone under any excuse. Law and order must be maintained at all costs,” Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune.

Rahman said the country’s freedom-loving people had given BNP victory and described the outcome as “the victory of the people.” “From today, everyone is free. Congratulations to everyone. With the participation of everyone, the journey towards a fascism-free state in the country has begun,” the BNP chairman said.

“Everyone’s thoughts are important in building the country. We will build the country based on everyone’s opinions,” he said.

The thirteenth parliamentary elections took on significance because they were held after a period of tumultuous political vacuum, instability and a fragile security situation, including widespread attacks on minorities after student-led protests in August 2024 toppled Sheikh Hasina’s fifteen-year rule.

According to the Election Commission (EC), the BNP secured 209 of the 297 seats, while the right-wing Jamaat-e-Islami secured 68 seats. Hasina’s Awami League party was barred from participating in the elections, which recorded a turnout of 59.44 percent.

The EC has postponed the announcement of results for two seats: Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4, while the elections for one seat were postponed due to the death of a candidate.
