#12 Northeastern’s Joe Connor’s one-time past Mikhail Yegorov with 1:07 left in regulation broke a 2-2 tie, allowing the Huskies to edge past #18/19 Terriers on Friday night at Matthews Arena. Despite an improved effort, BU left the rink with yet another loss.

“I thought there were parts of the game where we played well,” Coach said Jay Parolfo told the media after the match. “I thought there were moments in the game where we saw similar things from our team.”

He was referring to a flurry of defensive zone and center ice turnovers, especially in the opening period, that created a Grade A scoring opportunity. Yegorov, who stopped 22 shots, responded with big saves.

“We played quite well. We couldn’t find a way to score. And then it’s just disappointing that you allow such a chance with a minute to go. And again there wasn’t enough detail defensively and that cost us.”

Terriers took a 2-1 lead after one period after goals from Mick Frechettewhile playing his third game on defense, and Nick Roukounakis.

One minute into the match, Ryder Ritchie set up Frechette for a quick wrist flick from the blue line that sailed through traffic and past goalie Quentin Sigurdson. Jonathan Morello got the second assist.

The Huskies responded at the 3:50 mark when Andy Moore found space behind the BU defenders and tipped Dylan Finlay’s shot from the point past Yegorov.

After two extended offensive zone possessions by Northeastern, the Terriers regained the lead. Owen McLaughlin tracked down a puck and sent it to Jack Harvey in the left circle. Roukounakis headed towards the net, collected Harvey’s pass and fired a backhand past Sigurdson’s glove for his second goal in two games.

BU held a 17-10 lead in the middle period, including seven on failed power plays. but the only goal was scored by the home team. At 2:17, Austen May’s wrister shot from the top of the right circle past a shielded Yegorov, who leveled northeast.

Freshman John McNelisHis speed created three A-chances in the second period, but he did not take them. The third came on a short-handed breakaway that led to a penalty shot, which Sigurdson stymied.

Before the period ended, BU canceled back-to-back penalties, including 1:05 of 5-on-3.

Terriers also had a shot and ball advantage in the third period. Thirteen minutes in, Cole Hutson tried to make a turnover and celebrated the idea that he had scored. The no-goal call on the ice was upheld after review.

Northeastern was limited to just three shots in the final period. The latter turned out to be the decisive factor.

Despite registering 34 shots, with Hutson and Ritchie combining for 10, the Terriers’ top scorers produced just one assist.

“I really thought again: Morello, McNelis, Merrill, Roukounakis,” Pandolfo noted, “those are the guys who are having success for us right now, up front. You know, some of our guys that have been here a while. Not so much.’

The teams conclude the home-and-home series Saturday night at Agganis Arena.
