The last that Eddie Howe and Newcastle United needed prior to the start of their Premier League campaign was a new storm to navigate.
On Monday the week started relatively smoothly, with the Malick Thiaw deal that made beautiful progress, and even rumors about a possible step for Bilal El Khannououss from Leicester City.
But when the news from Tuesday that Alexander Isak was adamant about never again for the club, it landed, and it might have brought the club into the most uncomfortable position with regard to the preservation or selling of the Swede.
Sky Sports’ Gary Neville has given a pretty interesting view of the Saga, and it is a where many Newcastle fans will agree with …
Online talking about the Isak and Liverpool drama, Neville believes that Newcastle has only one option this summer: keeping Isak.
It is an unusually positive attitude towards us from the former Manchester United -Man, who delivers destructive criticism of Isak and the actions of him and his agent.
“Isak must be angry with his agent. It’s unpleasant. I feel for Eddie Howe.”
Somewhat sympathetic adds Neville: “Isak wants to win trophies and agites for a move because he has one career. At 25 he has five or six good years left.”
But it is here where Neville believes that we have to put our foot down and stop the constant situation that escalates further.
“It seems that this man is falling tools and says he is not playing and I don’t think that’s right. Newcastle must be strong here, when you are the club, it sends the wrong message to sell after what happened.”
“I think they should keep him for another year because the precedent will be dangerous for Newcastle.”
From a pure quality of football point, then we would be crazy to sell Isak in this phase of the window. Absolutely an integral part of our success last season, he will be just as important if we want to make progress in the Premier League of Champions League for the next nine months.
In combination with the fact that there are almost no strikers on the market that can match Isak for figures and potential, as well as every club in the world who is willing to pay us too much for an attacker like we sell Isak, and it is a bad decision everywhere.
Neville is especially right when he says that selling Isak after everything that happened, is a dangerous precedent: that if a player cancel enough and then refuses to play, then we will return the player and give what they want.
According to all the bills, we have done the right one so far to take every step of the road: expecting that Isak will honor his current contract, plus so that he is absent with media bows and the pre-season tour to concentrate on his recovery plus the persistent transfer situation.
So if we were to sell it now, after the club and the name of the manager were dragged through the mud over the past two weeks, what would do another big star in the future in the future, regardless of how loyal and supportive for the club they seem to be just a few months earlier as Isak seemed to be.
