“We are proud of announcing the addition of Kyle Flanagan as our new assistant coach,” said Slu -head coach Brent Brakke in a statement. “Kyle was one of the most dominant players in college hockey during his time as a skating saint and generally considered one of the best in the country. He was a captain, All-American, and Hobey Baker-Finalist. Kyle joins us after a very successful scout career at the Ottawa Senators is senators.”
“I am lucky for the possibility of becoming a member of this coaching staff and I am excited to be back in Appleton Arena,” Flanagan added.
Flanagan was an impact player from day 1 for Joe Marsh and the Saints, with 28 points in 32 games in his first year season. The competent attacker placed more than 35 points per season in the coming three seasons and was named Dr. Stuart A. who each won the most valuable player of those three years. His senior season in 2012-2013 was mainly impressive, with the captain placing 47 points on 15 goals and 32 assists. Flanagan was named All-American for his efforts and was a top 10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award.

“But beyond the praises and experience, which really distinguishes Kyle is that he is a great person,” said Brekke. “Kyle embodies the character and culture that we appreciate at St. Lawrence. We are pleased to welcome him at home and look forward to the impact he will have on our student athletes and program. Welcome back, Kyle. Once a saint, always a saint.”
Gardner brings coaching and playing experience at collegial and professional level for more than two decades, with a reputation for the development of elite goalkeepers and contributions to teams of championship caliber.
“We are pleased to welcome Greg to our staff,” said Brekke. “He brings a wealth of experience after he has coached lecture hockey for many years. Greg has an excellent history in recruitment and player development, especially at the goalkeeper position. As a former goalkeeper himself, Greg will be a big asset for our group of goalkeepers.”
Gardner joins the saints after a term of office as an associated head coach at Mercyhurst (2014-25), where he played a crucial role in the development of players, recruitment and video analysis. During his time in Mercyhurst, Gardner helped the Lakers to several Atlantic Hockey Four performances, including an AHA title in the regular season in 2017–18, when the team led the conference in Power Play scoring at 23.5%. That season also saw five players earn all-AHA awards.
Under the custody of Gardner, first -year goalkeeper Adam Carlson in 2016 signed an NHL contract with the Washington Capitals and became the sixth player in program history.
“I am honored and enthusiastic to become a member of St. Lawrence University Community and proud hockey tradition,” said Gardner. “Thanks to coach Brekke, the staff and the administration for the chance.”
Prior to Mercyhurst, Gardner spent three seasons in Princeton, where he supervised recruitment and player development. His work has contributed to the growth of future NHL players, including goalkeeper Michael Condon. Gardner also served five seasons with his Alma Mater, Niagara, and helped the Purple Eagles in Leiden to two cha-titles in the regular season, a Chatournament Championship and a NCAA tournament performance.
As a player, Gardner was a striking goalkeeper at Niagara and graduated with a degree in trade and psychology.
