Dodgers claim Michael Siani

The Dodgers announced they have claimed outfielder Michael Siani off waivers from the Braves. Atlanta designated him for assignment when they signed Mike Yastrzemski earlier this week. The Dodgers had a number of 40-man vacancies. This move technically puts them at 39 but Edwin Diaz will take the last spot once his signing becomes official.

Siani, 26, is a glove-first depth outfielder. He played the past four Major League seasons, spending time with the Reds and Cardinals. During that period, he was sent to the plate 383 times. His 6.3% walk rate and 27.9% strikeout rate so far in his career are both sub-par numbers. His batting line of .221/.277/.270 is well below average. His minor league numbers aren’t much better. He has a .217/.329/.337 line on the farm over the last three years.

But he has been able to provide value elsewhere. He has stolen 21 bases in 26 attempts. He has played 1,014 innings on the grass, playing all three spots, but mainly center. He got 17 outs above average and seven defensive runs saved in that time.

Siani still has an option, meaning he could be sent to Triple-A without being exposed to waivers. Either way, the Cards will put him on the line at the end of the 2025 season. Atlanta picked him up, but he barely lasted a month on their roster.

The Dodgers have some fluidity in their outfield group. On paper they do Teoscar Hernández And Andy Pages in two places. There have been some trade rumblings surrounding Hernández, but general manager Brandon Gomes has pushed back on that. Pages had a good regular season, but struggled in the playoffs and lost playing time. Tommy Edman could be involved, but he is currently recovering from ankle surgery and may be needed at second base. Hyeseong Kim is another multi-positional guy who could see some outfield time. Alex Bell is in the mix.

Siani jumps into a depth group that also consists of Ryan Ward And Esteury Ruizwhich have all three options. Siani could be sent to Triple-A with those two, but he could also fill a bench role as a defensive specialist and pinch runner. He has less than two years of service, meaning he is not yet arbitration eligible and could theoretically be retained for several years if the Dodgers find him useful.
