The Congress on Sunday (February 1, 2026) lashed out at the Modi government over US President Donald Trump’s comments that India will buy oil from Venezuela instead of Iran, saying the US leader “continues to provide information about what our own government has done or will do”.

The opposition party’s dig came after Mr. Trump, in response to a question, told reporters while traveling on Air Force One: “China is welcome to come in and we will make a lot of money from oil. We welcome China.”

“We’ve already done a deal. India is coming, and they’re going to buy Venezuelan oil instead of buying it from Iran. So we’ve already done that deal, the concept of the deal,” Trump said.

Congress Secretary in Charge of Communications Jairam Ramesh shared the audio of Mr Trump’s comments on X.

“He [Mr. Trump] told us that Op Sindoor had been discontinued. He told us that India had stopped buying Russian oil. And now this,” the Congress leader said.

“President Trump continues to give us information about what our own government has done or will do,” Mr. Ramesh said on X.
